Mississauga News - Letter to the Editor - also sent to other GTA media - July 3, 2007 By Donald Barber RE: Mandatory support the troops yellow ribbons on public vehicles. Dear Sir: July 3, 2007 Can we support Canadian troops but not the war? Yes. The choice to support either the troops or the war must be a personal & intellectual one in a Democracy and not mandate by certain politicians by way of using government vehicles (at taxpayers expense), as billboards to promote their political beliefs and agenda. Politicians hiding behind the troops so people will not question or debate the war issue is anti-Democratic and just plain wrong! Clearly, the (current), Canada government does not want to have its citizens debating the a war issue - do they feel we are not up to the task or the we will not agree? The Viet Nan war rightfully came to an end by way of informed public pressure and in spite of calls, then too, to support the troops in the field. Even in hind sight, it was the right decision and if anything it should have been made sooner. Many hoped the current invasion and occupation would end the growing of poppies for opium, instead the crops have increased and I blame the politicians for that (one of too many so far), failure as well. If we are given no say in the issue and the government feels justified in postering its vehicles with its propaganda to end debate and require support by way of government intimation - is that really how a Democracy works?
